A Case of Hypothyroidism

This week let us see an amazing case of Hypothyroidism treated with Homoeopathy.

Chief Complaints:

A twenty years old unmarried female was suffering from:

  • Tendency to gain weight for the last 1 year.
  • Swelling all over body with puffiness of face in the morning and swelling both lower limbs on hanging limbs down.

Associated Complaints:

  • Moderate to severe pain and stiffness Lumbosacral region for the last two years aggravated by prolonged standing, forward bending, walking and better by lying down and rest.
  • Pain and stiffness right shoulder radiating to right upper limb with numbness in right hand.
  • Thin, watery, offensive P/V discharge staining the linen.

Past History:

  • Surgery for Left Submandibular Tubercular Lymphadenitis at the age of 11 years followed by Antitubercular treatment.

Family History:

  • Tuberculosis in family
  • Mother – Hysterectomy

Investigation:

Thyriod Function Test (21/03/2011)

T3 – 30 ng/dl, T4 – 0.90 µg/dl, TSH – 150 µIU/ml

Medicine Selected:
Calcarea carbonica

Date–Wise Follow–Up:
April 01, 2011:
Calcarea carb 30 weekly was prescribed followed by Rhustox 30 BD for 2 weeks.

April 15, 2011:
Swelling all over body reduced. Pain lumbosacral region and right shoulder region reduced. P/V discharge also reduced. Same prescription was repeated for 2 weeks.

May 05, 2011:
Swelling all over body further reduced. Pain lumbosacral region, right knee and right shoulder region increased after initial reduction. P/V discharge reduced. Calcarea carb 30 weekly was repeated followed by Rhustox 30 BD for 2 weeks.

May 20, 2011:
Patient over all better except pain right knee (H/O Injury) and headache aggravated by heat. Calcarea carb 30 weekly was repeated followed by Rhustox 30 and Glonoine 30 BD alternately for 4 weeks.

June 23, 2011:
Patient over all better. Calcarea carb 30 weekly was repeated followed by Rhustox 30 BD for 2 weeks.

July 07, 2011:
Patient clinically much better except P/V discharges. Repeat Thyroid function test dated July 7, 2012 revealed T3 – 75 ng/dl, T4 – 7.60 µg/dl and TSH – 10.36 µIU/ml.
Placebo was prescribed for 2 weeks.

Report Oct 2011

July 22, 2011:
Patient clinically much better. Calcarea carb 30 weekly was repeated followed by Rhustox 30 BD for 2 weeks.

August 08, 2011:
Patient clinically much better but P/V discharge increased. Calcarea carb 200 was repeated fortnightly followed by Rhustox 30 BD and Alumina 30 BD alternately for 2 weeks.

August 23, 2011:
Patient over all much better. Same prescription was repeated for 4 weeks.

September 22, 2011:
Patient clinically asymptomatic. Same prescription was repeated for 2 weeks. Patient was advised to get thyroid function test repeated.

October 07, 2011:
Repeat Thyroid function test dated October 5, 2012 revealed T3 – 84 ng/dl, T4 – 7.60 µg/dl and TSH – 5.44 µIU/ml (WNL). Patient was advised to stop treatment and report in case of any trouble.

This case demonstrates how even a difficult case like HYPOTHYROIDISM can be cured with Homoeopathy.
