HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Virus attacks T-cells (CD-4 cells) in the immune system, which is our body’s natural defence against illness. AIDS develops when the affected person’s immune system is too weak to fight off infection, followed by development symptoms and illnesses. The last stage of HIV is when the infection is very advanced, and if left untreated will lead to death.
According to UNAIDS, approximately 36.7 million people worldwide were living with HIV/AIDS at the end of 2015. Of these, 1.8 million were children (<15 years old). An estimated 2.1 million individuals worldwide became newly infected with HIV in 2015. Due to better access to life-saving treatments, the number of deaths due to AIDS has decreased in the past few years. It is essential however, that quality of the life of person living with AIDS should be improved.
